My Guest artist this quarter is Marguerite Mobley, Presenting “Expressions in Wood”. As the title suggests, Expressions clearly defines what Marguerites work is all about. Working mostly in various types of Pine, the faces she carves, either in realistic or comedic form come alive with their own personalities. Featured in National woodcarvers Magazine June 2000 issue she strives to make each one different so that every carving is truly a work of art. Not only an artist, Marguerite has taught carving to many and is frequently sought out for her wonderfully personalized commission work.

Often, you can find Marguerite carving away at the Thousand Trails (TT) Preserve in the Eastern Oregon city of Bend, where she spends many months of the year with her husband of 59 years, Bob.

It is also at the TT Preserve, where much of her work can be seen in their featured Western Town Square. There, Marguerite has created several five foot carved figures with accompanying story boards that bring out her wonderful humor and joy for life. I hope you enjoy her work as much as I do.

  Tree Spirits: All hand carved, with no two alike. Legend has it that If you receive a gift of a “tree spirit” carving you must concentrate on good thoughts and gently blow into the face of the spirit thus bringing the talisman to life. Carved by Marguerite from aged trees, she hopes the spirit will bring you the blessings of good fortune. This is a tradition begun by Native Americans and carried on by those who like a little extra luck in their lives.

All hand carved, this one of a kind cane is done on wood and lacquered in black. Into the cane is carved and wonderfully unique spirit face. The cane measures 35 ½ inches tall. The bottom of the cane is protected with a skid resistant rubber stopper.

On the inside of the stick, there is a stone embellishment that is so perfectly colored that it almost seems to be part of the wood.
